A Guided Walk of Historic Clare

Sunday 19 September 2021

10.30am/2.00pm

A guided walk around this compact market town which flourished for centuries. Although Clare’s history stretches back into early England, the remains of a Norman castle dominate the town, underlining the importance of Clare in the history of the area.

Later in its history the castle and Clare manor became part of extensive royal lands and as a result many of Clare’s buildings have important stories to tell – indeed, over 130 are listed and range from timber framed-medieval structures through to grand Georgian and Regency facades.

Walk with us to hear about the people behind these buildings and later how the coming of the railway changed the town. We will also walk through the tranquil grounds of the priory and reflect on its importance in the nation’s history, finishing in the magnificent Clare Country Park.

Meet at the Old Goods Shed in Clare Country Park, adjacent to the car park.

Tours last approximately 90 minutes.

Tours are free as part of Heritage Open Days 2021, but pre-booking is essential. Max 15 people per tour.
