The Legacy of the Abbey

The story of the Abbey does not end with its dissolution in 1539

In the centuries that followed, this focal point of the town has played host to historical events of local and national importance, as well as adding richly to the social life of the town. This walk brings to life the journey of regeneration through stories which span nearly 500 years since the last Benedictine monk departed.
